Don’t Let Size Fool You: EAWR Delivers Big Academic Opportunity

Small School. Big Academic Impact.

East Alton Wood River High School Demonstrates How a Focused Instructional System Delivers College, Career, and Real-World Readiness

East Alton Wood River High School is proving that school size does not determine opportunity. Through a coordinated instructional framework, expanded college partnerships, and hands-on career pathways, EAWR continues to deliver a level of academic access typically associated with much larger districts—while maintaining the personalized support families expect from a community high school.

Over the past several years, EAWR has intentionally built a structured teaching and learning system that connects strategic planning, MAP growth benchmarking, PLC data cycles, ACT readiness alignment, and MTSS intervention supports into one unified pathway for student success.

“Our goal is simple,” said Superintendent Rob Miller. “Every student should graduate with a plan, a pathway, and confidence in what comes next.”

College Credit Without College Debt

EAWR students can earn real college credit while still in high school through partnerships with Lewis and Clark Community College. Courses include English Composition I and II, U.S. History, college-level mathematics, Spanish, and Welding—all available at no cost to families.

Students may also participate in the SIUE Engineering and Computer Science partnership program—an opportunity available at only two high schools in Madison County.

These experiences allow students to graduate ahead academically while reducing future tuition costs.

Career Pathways That Start Before Graduation

EAWR students explore career interests early through both in-house Career Technical Education courses and regional training partnerships.

Through the Collinsville Area Vocational Center, students gain hands-on experience in fields such as:

  • Automotive Technology

  • Criminal Justice

  • Cybersecurity

  • Dental Assisting

  • Clinical Health Occupations

  • Building Trades

  • Electronics

  • Early Childhood Education

  • Cosmetology

  • Food Service

Locally, EAWR offers additional coursework in:

  • Welding and Advanced Welding

  • Manufacturing

  • Woods and Construction

  • Computer-Aided Drafting

  • Coding and Cybersecurity

  • Graphics and Design

  • Business and Marketing

  • Cooperative Education internships

Students graduate not only prepared, but experienced.

A Coordinated Academic System That Tracks Growth

Since 2022, EAWR has implemented a districtwide instructional structure that includes:

  • universal MAP benchmarking

  • structured PLC data review cycles

  • year-long ACT readiness alignment

  • individualized student growth goals

  • Tier 2 academic intervention checkpoints

  • SEL screening integration within MTSS supports

Rather than relying on isolated testing events, teachers use multiple aligned data sources to guide instruction throughout the school year.

The result is a system where student progress is monitored continuously—not just reported periodically.

Opportunities You Won’t Find Everywhere

Additional partnerships extend learning beyond the traditional classroom:

  • Fire Science training through Lewis and Clark

  • Electricity program with industry equipment experience

  • Riverbend CEO entrepreneurship program

These programs prepare students for careers immediately after graduation or provide strong foundations for continued education.

The EAWR Advantage

EAWR combines:

  • small class sizes

  • individualized academic planning

  • college credit opportunities

  • regional career partnerships

  • coordinated intervention supports

  • leadership development experiences

The District’s instructional model ensures students graduate prepared for college, career pathways, military service, or workforce entry—with direction and confidence.

At EAWR, small school means big opportunity—and measurable results.
